The Museum District's November Openings, and Which Free Nights Actually Get You In

October 29, 2026

"Special Exhibitions require a separate, discounted All Access ticket on Thursday." That sentence sits on the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston admission page, right below the line about Free Thursdays. Thursday, November 5, is the first Thursday since the MFAH's new Winslow Homer show opened.

This November the neighborhood's free hours and its new openings point in two different directions. The Homer watercolors at the MFAH and the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Houston Museum of Natural Science both sit outside the free nights. If you want a cheap November close to home, you'll build it from the permanent collections, the smaller institutions' calendars, and Hermann Park. And in the park, the Conservancy is now picking a new café operator around one stated goal: keep it reasonably priced.

Free Thursday at the MFAH Covers the Collections. The Homer Is Extra.

On Thursdays, the MFAH's permanent collections are free for everyone, courtesy of Shell USA, Inc. That free entry stops at the doors of the special exhibitions. Of Light and Air: Winslow Homer from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston opened in the Law Building on November 1 and runs through February 7, 2027. The museum describes more than 45 Homer watercolors, plus oils, drawings and prints, all on loan from Boston.

There are two ways in. A Member ticket or an All Access ticket includes same-day entry to the Homer show. On a Thursday, that All Access ticket is the discounted one the admission page mentions. The exhibition page doesn't list a dollar price, so check the MFAH ticketing page before you walk over.

The MFAH's other new arrival has a much longer run. Vlisco: The Story of Wax Print Textiles appears on the museum's on-view list from October 28, 2026, through October 17, 2027. A show that stays up for almost a year doesn't need to be squeezed into one November weekend. Homer leaves in February.

Free Tuesday at HMNS Is General Admission. The Scrolls Need Their Own Ticket.

The same pattern holds a few blocks south. HMNS offers free general admission on Tuesdays from 5 to 8 p.m., first come, first served, according to the museum's hours and admission page. Dead Sea Scrolls: The Exhibition opens on Level 3 on Friday, November 20. It's a special exhibition with timed entry, and visitors pick a date and time when they buy.

Dead Sea Scrolls ticket Price listed by HMNS
Adult, public $40
Child, public $30
Member, adult or child $25

For a family of two adults and two children, public tickets come to $140. At member pricing, the same four people pay $100. A Tuesday-evening free visit still covers the permanent halls. Timed tickets for the scrolls start November 20.

The Rest of the Month's Calendar Comes From the Smaller Institutions

With both big openings behind tickets, the rest of the November calendar comes from the Museum District's smaller venues. Most of their events are one-night programs rather than exhibitions. The listing below runs from publication day through the end of the month. "Free" appears only where the venue itself says so.

Date Event Venue Admission as listed
Thu., Nov. 5 Cinema Club screening of Hale County This Morning, This Evening CAMH See venue
Thu., Nov. 5 and every Thursday Permanent collections MFAH Free
Fri., Nov. 6, 6–10 p.m. Night Market 2026 Asia Society Texas See venue
Thu., Nov. 12, 4:30–9 p.m. Global Education Symposium 2026 Asia Society Texas See venue
Fri., Nov. 13, 7:30–9 p.m. CelloGayageum Asia Society Texas See venue
Sat., Nov. 14 Galveston Texas, by Eli Greene and Devin T. Mays CAMH See venue
Sun., Nov. 15, 2–4 p.m. Recuerdos de mi abuelo The Health Museum Free
Tuesdays, 5–8 p.m. General admission HMNS Free
Fri., Nov. 20 Dead Sea Scrolls: The Exhibition opens HMNS Timed, paid
Sun., Nov. 22, 2–4 p.m. Jazz & Journaling The Health Museum See venue

A few of these are worth a closer look. The CAMH November calendar includes a performance on November 14 by two Houston-based artists, Eli Greene and Devin T. Mays. Asia Society Texas has a crowded first half of the month, including its Night Market on Friday evening, November 6. The Health Museum's upcoming events are Sunday afternoon programs from 2 to 4 p.m., and the museum lists the November 15 program, Recuerdos de mi abuelo, as free to attend.

Outdoors, Miller Outdoor Theatre is back after its construction period. CultureMap reported the reopening in July. The theatre's 2026 performance list runs through November 14. That puts the hill in Hermann Park on the free side of the month, which is also where the park's next change is happening.

Hermann Park Is Picking a New Café Operator Around Price

On October 15, Hermann Park Conservancy issued a request for proposals for the Commons Café. That's the walk-up counter at 6001 Fannin St., near the Lott Family Carousel, the Space Adventure playground and the Splash Cove water play area. The building is about 847 square feet. The Pavilion seats 24 café customers, and the nearby picnic tables and uncovered seating hold 150 more. Those tables are public park amenities, not café-only seating.

The full RFP document asks for:

"a welcoming, family-friendly and reasonably priced café for the Park's broad and diverse audience."

Bidders have to show how their menu, prices and service "will remain accessible to the full range of Park visitors." Beer and wine can be part of the concept with approval and licensing, but alcohol can't be the main focus. In a month when the neighborhood's biggest draws cost $25 to $40 a ticket, the park's own concession is being re-bid with price as a stated requirement. The Conservancy says Hermann Park gets about six million visitors a year.

The RFP doesn't name the current operator. It says equipment will be checked "after the current operator vacates the premises." Here is the Conservancy's published timeline:

  1. Site visit for prospective operators: November 9
  2. Proposals due: November 30, 5 p.m.
  3. Selection expected: December 15
  4. Target agreement signing: January 8, 2027
  5. Preferred full opening: February 15, 2027
  6. Spring Break service target: March 6–14, 2027

If an operator opens in phases, the RFP asks for limited service by March 1, before Spring Break crowds arrive. The document also mentions plans for a new parking structure and pedestrian connection near the Commons, with timing that depends on design, funding and approvals. That project has no date yet. The café timeline does.

Zoo Lights Ends the Month on the Ticketed Side

The last November opening follows the same pattern as the first two. TXU Energy presents Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo runs from November 19, 2026, through January 3, 2027. Hours are 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., with last entry at 9:30. Zoo members get preview nights on November 17 and 18, when the zoo lists tickets at $14.95. A Sensory Inclusive Night is set for Monday, November 30. Details are on the Houston Zoo's Zoo Lights page.

Here's the week of November 16 on paper. Zoo member previews come first, then Zoo Lights opens on the 19th and the scrolls on the 20th, all within a few minutes' walk of each other. The Health Museum's free Sunday program falls on November 15, the day before. By the time the Conservancy names its café operator on December 15, the Homer show will be six weeks into its run.
